Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard, Double Rich Chocolate Review
For a couple months I have been using Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Gold Standard Protein and am really happy with it.
I initially was looking for an extra boost of protein throughout the day apart from my daily Shakeology (which is hand’s down the BEST shake out there, check it out here) and decided I would give the Gold Standard a try.
Just like most things I purchase, I read the reviews before hand and this one was no different. It got excellent reviews all over the internet for it’s taste, it’s high protein to low calorie ratio, and most importantly…it’s results.
Having used several Optimum Nutrition products over the years, the name is a trusted one and to be honest I have had pretty decent success on meeting my past goals using their products, so why not try it, right? So let’s get to it!
What’s In This Stuff?
The most attractive feature of this product is it’s 24 grams of protein and 5 BCAA’s, yet only 3 carbs, 120 calories, and 10 grams of fat per serving.
That really is a great combination when looking for a protein shake.
However, this is also a reason I would not use this shake as a meal replacement and I don’t think it is intended to be one either.
It simply just doesn’t have enough calories and nutritional “goodness” that your body needs over the course of the day especially when currently working out and exercising.
But if you are looking for a low calorie/high protein add-on through out the day, then Gold Standard may suit your need for that.
How Does It Mix?
The powder mixes easily in any shaker bottle. I usually mix it with water, but it tastes better if you mix it with milk and/or some fruit. Goes down easy with a few ice cubes. It is one of less “clumpy” shakes I have used which I like. There is nothing worse than drinking a shake and swallowing a big chunk of the powder despite how well you mixed it!!
I usually just mix mine in a shaker as I am usually on the go with it, but have blended it as well and it makes some decent tasting protein shakes if you get creative with it.
The Taste?
Let’s be honest here, a protein shake is not going to taste like a milkshake from Baskin Robbins or Dairy Queen…it’s
just not. Personally, I don’t even care about the taste as long as I can stomach getting it down because I know the benefits of what’s in it. Most of the reviews out there speak favorably of the taste, and I would simply say it’s okay. It’s not great, but not horrible either…
Of course, taste can always be improved when adding milk, fruit, etc…but it adds calories as well, so there is always give and take depending on your needs and what is most important to you.
The Cost?
This is where Gold Standard really knocks it out of the park…the PRICE! You can find prices as low as $21.00/1lb, $26.00/2lb, $53.00/5lb, and $98.00/10lb.
If your’e like me though, pounds doesn’t translate well to me…I want to know about servings per container. ”Hey, I’ve been tricked before, GNC, with you’re serving/scoops per serving deception!” There is nothing worse than buying a 5lb case for 80 bucks only to realize it is only going to last a wee and a half…sorry, but no thanks!
My 2lb container contains 28 servings, so you are roughly looking at about a one month supply if drinking one shake/day if you go with the 2lb container.
Conclusion
I definitely recommend Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Gold Standard Protein…I love the low calorie to high protein ratio, the servings per container per size of the container is not misleading, and I think what it lacks in the taste department it makes up for in cost. If you are looking to add an extra low calorie – high protein snack to your day, I’d give it go.

Purchase A Challenge Pack
I have been using this product for about 2 years now and it has helped me make great changes in my body type. The taste is better then any protein I have tried and it is mostly chemical free which I also enjoy. I would recommend this to anyone who is weary about taking supplements due to the nature of this product.
Thanks for the comment Martin! I have lots of friends that use this and love it as well. Thanks for the recommendation.
