What Equipment Do You Need For The Insanity Workout?

A question that I have been asked lately is…“What Equipment Do I Need For The Insanity Workout?’

Equipment always has to be a concern when preparing to start a new home based fitness program and you definitely want to make sure that you at least have the minimum required amount to be able to participate effectively and get the best results.

Programs like P90X, P90X2, and even Insanity Asylum all require a certain amount of equipment in order to create resistance.  Often times, dumbbells, resistance bands, and pull-up bars are used with these various Beachbody programs in order to create that much needed resistance, but not Insanity.

The thing that is unique about the Insanity Program is that the program uses ONLY your own body weight as a source of resistance.  All of the moves are developed in such a way that your own body weight is more than enough to create a killer workout.  So to answer the question about what equipment is needed…the answer is NONE!  Which is awesome!  The minimum requirement is simply a TV/DVD player (which we all probably have, right?) and enough floor space (which isn’t really that much) to do the workout.  That’s it!!

Although the initial price of Insanity may be higher than some of the other programs, you really have to look at what all is included in that, what your individual goals are, and the cost of other equipment that you would inevitably have to purchase going another route with a different program.  This feature alone makes Insanity really unique and a great flexible option for someone without equipment, without much space, or even someone who travels often and doesn’t want to miss their workouts.

However, there are a few recommendations on some items if you plan on attempting Insanity.

Although, there is no equipment  needed for Insanity, there are a couple things that I recommend.  The first is to pick up is the Results and Recovery Formula to aid in recovery.  Make no mistake about it…these workouts are intense and you will be sore.  I would have never made it through Insanity Asylum without this stuff.  Results and Recovery is an excellent friend to have and really helps with getting you ready for the next big workout and you will hear Shaun T himself recommend it often throughout his workouts.  For more info on the R and R Formula –  check out this blog post to get the full scoop.

The second thing I would recommend, is a good heart rate monitor.  You can pick one up at Wal-Mart or Target.  Even the one here from Beachbody is a really good one and at a good price as well.  This will help you to keep track of your zones and make sure that your heart doesn’t burst out of your chest with Shaun T pushing to get the most out of you, lol just kidding, but you do want to pay close attention to your heart rate during theses workouts.

And that’s it! There really is NO EQUIPMENT NEEDED to do the Insanity Program.  It’s a great program that have done myself.  If you are interested in starting a NO EQUIPMENT NECESSARY type of program that defintiely works, then just click on the link below.

  1. You also need a towel because you are going to sweat like you have never sweated before. Great post. I love Insanity.

  2. That’s good to know. I thought there may be equipment involved!

  3. One thing that I would add is a nice pair of of shoes, especially for those of you who have a history if back issues. Also a padded workout mat if working out on a hard surface.

    • That’s a good point Eric and you figure it out pretty quick lol. I know that I definitely had to experiment with my shoes with Asylum.

  4. It’s nice to be able to kick butt without using additional equipment.
    Good information.
